Presents

“How The West Was Sung”

“How The West Was Sung” is a musical production that’s been a year in the making. It was performed by the 42-voice Valley Chorale for the first time at The Sumner Center for Performing Arts on April 26, 2003 with the next performance scheduled for May 10, 2003 at the 600-seat antique Elma Theater in Elma, Washington. The show tells the story of the old west through the songs sung by sultry saloon gals, pioneers jostling in wagon trains, and crooned by cowboys soothing the cattle. The Saturday 8:00 PM presentation will include favorites like “Shenandoah”, “Oh, What A Beautiful Morning” and “Cool Water” in the singing style of the Sons of The Pioneers.

The Valley Arts Society, well known to audiences from King, Pierce, Thurston & Grays Harbor Counties began with the dream of George & Ellen Malesis to create a performing organization composed of musicians and singers from Western Washington who have to work for a living but yearn to perform and be treated as professional entertainers. Ordinarily, George observed, musicians like these are usually relegated to performing in church basements and school auditoriums. The Malesis’ decided to start a group that included choral groups, bands, and actors that was structured as a community of performers that would be treated as professionals that would be provided an opportunity to perform in professional settings. The dream came true and now the Valley Arts Society maintains three choirs, A Northwest Symphonic Band, and a drama organization that perform many venues in NW theaters. Among these The Elma Theater has previously presented; the opera “The Mikado’ 5/17/97 with KS Hall (owner of the Elma Theater) as Pooh Bah, “The Rainmaker” 10/5/96 (the play by Ogdan Nash), “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” (Connie Bevington of Raymond & ET Music Dir on flute) 11/8/97, and ”Nineties Nuggets” 5/2/98. Every one of these efforts has been well received by Elma Theater audiences. Kingsley Hall, Artistic Director of The Elma Theater is proud to share the Malesis’ dream and also dreams that artists should be compensated for their actual artistic talent and efforts. Kingsley says this will only be possible when the American public again becomes discriminating by returning to the live theater rather than media driven sheep watching talent less performers reading off of teleprompters.
