Director’s Notes

Many moons ago, in the summer of 1958, in a resort in the Poconos, three people adapted Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, into a musical for a week long run at the resort This one act musical became so popular it was held over and then snapped up for a commercial run in New York By the time it opened on Broadway, it had a new director, a second act, and a new title: Once Upon a Mattress. Princess Winnifred was to be played by a newcomer named Carol Burnett. It has been a lot of fun bringing this fairy tale story to life with the Elma High School Theatre Company.

In taking on the job of Drama Advisor for Elma High School, I have many times felt like I was swimming way over my head. I appreciate all the many people who have thrown me a life line and helped to make this production possible, especially Laurie Holdsworth, Brad McNeill, Kathy Wolverton, my husband Bill (for his endless support and he also built the bed), my family, Stacey Rockey, Sue McMaster, Norma Johanson, Kingsley Hall, Susan Straka and Sonny Friehoff of the Driftwood Theatre who loaned us props and costumes, and finally the Elma High School staff and administration.

The best part of this job has been working with the students. They are a crazy bunch of talented, intelligent, reliable and fun knights, ladies and royalty. They have made this job easy and fun.
