Fifteen Year Anniversary May 1st 1991 - May 1st 2006 Paint the front of the building again

On May 1st 1991 Mr. Kingsley Hall took legal possession of The Elma Theater. Immediately spent about another $50,000 in necessary repair on such things as; only one of eight toilets in building worked, had to replace all the plaster on the exposed lath on both stairways to balcony walls, replace all walls and ceilings to crying room & three phase fan room (Where someone later turned on the fan with door and air supply tunnel trap door shut so external air pressure collapsed the room and we had to do it again), Computerized all the lights and eliminated the back stage knife switches and one place (projection booth) house light dimmers. Because the building has in some cases three dropped ceilings each with it's own set of old electric wire systems each sometimes still live it was a real puzzle to accomplish some of that. Converted and thereby eliminated all three phase power required by arc-projection equipment and seven horse fan motor to single phase (Thereby Eliminating expense of needing that service). Spent a lot of effort on the first of many attempts to fix all the roofs. At one time (Dec 1992 ??) it leaked so bad over the stage when it was so cold inside it snowed indoors during a production of Scrooge (now that was realistic stagecraft). The ballet dancer wore socks instead of ballet shoes which froze to the floor and were destroyed during each of the four performances. Thanks to a several hundred dollar contribution by Rex Valentine for materials a bunch of us male actors got up on top of  the fly space tower during the coldest winter on record for years and re roofed it. On May 1st, 1991 The dressing rooms had over three feet of water in them due to a broken three inch fire hydrant (which could not and still can't turn off) water line under the concrete floor of the middle dressing room. Had to rent three huge pumps to get water out faster than leak to be able to find and fix. When fixing the toilet in men's room the plumber broke off the pipe to flush tank supply tube flush with the surface of the concrete floor about two hours before our Grand Opening on June 1st 1991.Water shot up with such pressure as to hit the ceiling and flood the entire lobby until we could figure out how to turn whole building water off. Many new to me at the time friendly volunteers from the community including City of Elma forces were in panic until the plumber calmly broke my brand new hand axe hickory handle and whittled it into a point and stuck it then pounded it into the pipe where it swelled and after painting has held back all that pressure to this day. Because the lobby carpet had to have the water sucked out (just in time) it was a lot cleaner than it might have been when the cast arrived for our first show by three limos and motorcycle escorts. The safety relief on the coal fired steam boiler with it's exhaust right over the door out of the boiler room scalded a couple of us pretty badly on first fire up. Repaired relief valve and rerouted exhaust only to retire boiler with a failed attempt to heat building with 410,000 b.t.u. overhead gas heater in balcony. When that didn't work we with the help of Gray's Harbor Pellet Heat (Tom & Linda Rose) became one of the first theaters to heat the whole building by renewable energy i.e. five pellet stoves and two pellet furnaces. (See Pellet Heat Institute Web Page about this). Thus began the 15 years of many crises which thanks to the help and donations of many people some paid but mostly volunteers we can all be very proud that during this time frame the City of Elma has managed to keep this theater operational without government funds. The Elma Theater has definitely put Elma on the Map

Thanks Everyone
